Lockdown for me has definitely been a blessing rather than a curse. Until I went back to work, I finally had a pretty large amount of time on my hands to use at my discretion. At the beginning of 2020, I was planning on having around 3 months (just) to go wherever I liked, waste my time if I please or vacation in Greece after my A-Levels. Never did it come into my mind that this would actually be doubled to 6 months… I still cannot get my head around it. Since March, I was anxious that I’d end up putting on a ton of weight, and knew if I didn’t do something to prevent it, I would be unhappy with myself and feel as though I’d failed. A little side note here, if you have not done any exercise, if you have sat watching films for the past 3 months that is ok too, but for me personally I do not feel as though I have been productive if I sit around all day long…
So the cycling then…
My god, it was so hard at first. I genuinely forgot how to ride a bike and I know that is so embarrassing to admit but I guess you would forget something like that if you hadn’t rode for what.. it must be 3 years at least? I set myself a target of cycling further each day.. it ended up at around 5 miles each day.
How did you keep the motivation?
Get up and go. I cannot say it simpler than that. I’d have some days when I’d despise going, but once I was out there I ended up really enjoying it.. except if it was raining of course.. who really likes to cycle in the rain? I’d get up at 6 every day, seize the day an’ all that. Tracking your progress on apps such as Strava or Komoot are brilliant for taking note of your time, speed and distance. It makes me feel happier and more successful if I can visually see my progress every day and so this is another idea that helped me to continue the goal I’d set.
Did you see any differences in the way you look?
Yes! I didn’t really mention to my friends that I was doing this, and one day one of them said to me the my calfs looked more toned.. thats when I realised how much I had been able to improve my body through just doing a little bit every day… I was able to tone up my legs and through extra ab exercises post cycle, I was also able to tone up my stomach quicker. I am very happy with my results so far.
